Course Description
This course examines the role of community risk mitigation planning and implementation as an extension of executive fire administration leadership. Prioritization strategies for developing community-based, collaborative, proactive partnerships with community stakeholders and fire administration organizations will also be evaluated.

Rationale
Evaluation of service capabilities, coupled with community needs and threats, is necessary to create a solid plan for community risk mitigation. One of the larger components of such an effort is centered around community engagement, which is an element that is organically based. Through engagement and “known knowns”, a community can foster a relationship that is healthy and safe for all.

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in the Course Overview.
Discussion Board
The student will select one of the Risk Assessment Tools described in Chapter 1 and describe how he or she would use that tool as part of the risk assessment process. In addition, the student will select a job-related risk and based on his or her experience, will use this tool in a practical application for that example.
Case Study: Mount Everest Assignment
The student will use the Mount Everest Case Study that begins on page 75 of his or her text and create a PHA for climbing Mount Everest, paying special attention to: developing hazards, relative ranking hazards, and potential mitigation efforts.
Case Study: FMEA Presentation Assignment
The student will conduct and present an FMEA Analysis on either their home or fire station.
Case Study: Continuity of Operations Assignment
On page 216 of the textbook is a list of the Critical Functions of a Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP). The student will select one function that he or she believes a locality or organization he or she is familiar with may need to address due to challenges. These challenges may be community-driven or organization driven. Additionally, the student will select a function that he or she believes a locality/organization he or she is familiar with handles effectively. The student will also provide examples to support his or her assertions with an understanding that specific names and details should not be included to protect the organization and its people.
Case Study: Decision Tree Development Assignment
Using the information from the text about development of decision trees, develop an event tree for Case Study 5 on page 245. Additionally, select a situation that you have personal experience with and critically analyze that situation using an event tree. As part of the assignment, provide a summary of your selection for context.
Case Study: Vulnerability Assessment Assignment
Conduct a vulnerability assessment of your organization or locality. Pay special attention to internal and external hazards that exist and choose three that may be especially challenging. Describe each of the vulnerabilities in detail and utilize the construct within the text and the FEMA website to discuss the nature of the vulnerability and what can be done to affect the nature of the situation. If an assessment already exists for your organization of locality you may use it as part of your work however, do not plagiarize.

Discussion: Emerging Risk
There are several emerging risk examples provided in the readings this week. As you review the list, select two examples that may impact your community or organization and discuss how you would provide data and specifics to identify the examples as emerging risks to your community/organization.
