Rationale

The course is an upper level history course needed to support the history major and minor for Liberty University Online. The Civil War was a critical pivot point in early U.S. history, at which the country finally and painfully broke with slavery, and began the process of applying its founding ideals, as laid out in the Declaration of Independence, to the difficult issue of race. The Civil War also marked the triumph of nationalism over sectionalism and set the stage for the next major phase of American history.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Identify major figures and events in the Civil War and Reconstruction.
2. Explain how political, economic, military, diplomatic, religious, and cultural factors influenced America during the Civil War and Reconstruction.
3. Demonstrate college-level competencies in reading comprehension and historical writing.
4. Apply biblical principles to the problems and issues of the era.

Discussions (2)

The student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each discussion. Each thread must be at least 300 words, demonstrate course-related knowledge, and include at least 1 scholarly resource in the current Turabian format. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates threads. Each reply must be at least 150 words.

PowerPoint Presentation Assignments (2)

The student will submit a PowerPoint presentation chosen from an approved list of topics. The presentation must be between 10–12 slides and include presentation notes. Each slide’s presentation notes must be 250–300 words.

Character Profile Assignment

The student will complete a provided template in the current Turabian format that focuses on a selected historical figure. The overall length must be 600–700 words. The student will select a figure from an approved list of options. The template must include at least 3 scholarly references.

Book Review Assignment

The student will read Allen C. Guelzo’s book Lincoln: A Very Short Introduction and will write a book review on it, summarizing its content and its view of Lincoln. The book report must be 500-800 words in length.
