This course provides the student with advanced health assessment skills within a selected population. Biopsychosocial, cultural, spiritual, physical, ethical concepts, and systems theory will be integrated into managing the advanced healthcare needs of the client. Students will apply the nursing process and focus on improving patient outcomes. The theoretical framework for simulation design for nursing education, the nursing process, collaborative learning and guided reflection will be explored to create student-centered educational experiences for the attainment of clinical skills and critical thinking. An educational site affiliation agreement with a student-selected approved facility is secured and a practicum contract is developed and established with an approved nurse educator preceptor prior to enrollment in this course; advanced clinical application practicum hours are initiated in NURS 617. Students must meet all pre-practicum requirements prior to enrollment in NURS 617; refer to Graduate Nursing Handbook for pre-practicum requirements.

This course will provide the student with the ability to enhance his/her knowledge and skills in a select area of clinical specialty and to provide methods of simulation design so that a scenario can be effectively developed in an educational setting.

Discussions are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided topic. Each thread must be at least 500 words, demonstrate course-related knowledge, and incorporate at least 2 peer-reviewed references published within the last years in current APA format. Biblical principles must also be integrated. In addition to the thread, the student must reply to 2 other classmates threads. Each reply must be at least 250 words, cite at least 1 peer-reviewed reference published within the last 5 years in the current APA format, and integrate biblical principles. (MLO E & G)

The student will write responses to prompts related to the Learn section materials. Each written assignment will be at least 3 pages, including 3 peer-reviewed references published within the last 5 years, and must follow current APA format. A title page and reference page must be included but will not count toward the total page count. (MLO E, F, G)
Practicum Goals and Objectives Assignments (2)
The student will complete the Practicum Goals and Objectives assignment in 2 parts using a rough draft and a final draft. The student will be required to write a list of 3 goals with 3 objectives for each goal for his/her practicum for this course. There must be a goal that focuses on advanced physical assessment, advanced pharmacology, and advanced pathophysiology. The student will be given 5 hours total toward his/her practicum hours for developing the Practicum Goals and Objectives and submitting his/her final draft. (MLO A, B, C).
Practicum Goals and Objectives – Draft Assignment
The student will first be required to submit a rough draft of his/her 3 proposed goals and 3 proposed objectives to the Canvas submission area for instructor approval.
Practicum Goals and Objectives – Final Assignment
The student will submit his/her instructor-approved list of 3 goals with 3 objectives for each goal to the Typhon practicum site as a Microsoft Word attachment and submit to Canvas. The student must also provide a copy to his/her preceptor prior to the start of the practicum hours.
Transition to Academia Assignment
The student will write a paper on a topic posed by the instructor, including personal reflection as it relates to his/her role as a nurse educator. The paper must be at least 5 pages, include 4–6 peer-reviewed references published within the last 5 years, and follow the current APA format and use appropriate level headings. A title page and reference page must be included but will not count toward the total page count. (MLS G)
Practicum/Clinical Log Assignments (2)
The Practicum/Clinical Log is the documentation of the 200-hour practicum experience of which 75 hours will be completed in this course. The documentation is to be completed in Typhon. Instructions for setting up Typhon are found in the MSN Student Handbook located in the School of Nursing Program Center. The log must be comprehensive in detail related to the experiences in the field and reflective of the National League for Nursing (NLN) competencies. The discussion must be in-depth and analytical. It must also include examples of how the student has applied the NLN competencies and readings from the textbooks and professional literature in the practicum setting. Any citations must be provided in the current APA format. Upon final approval of the practicum goals and objectives, the student will work on practicum hours weekly. Log submissions will be entered in Typhon and in Canvas.
Note: In addition to accruing the required number of practicum hours, there must be a passing grade for the practicum experience which includes the following: progression with the student’s established goals and objectives, an in-depth documentation of the practicum experiences as evidenced in the clinical log, and satisfactory preceptor evaluations. Failure to pass the practicum requirements will result in failure of the course; see the MSN Student Handbook located in the School of Nursing Program Center for practicum expectations related to performance and professionalism. Simulation Development Plan Assignment
The student will select a scenario suitable for undergraduate nursing students or registered nurses in a healthcare organization and develop a simulation plan using the provided template. The student may be creative in the development of this assignment assuming the simulation equipment is available. The student must include learning outcomes, the actual design of the scenario, and a plan for evaluation. (MLO D)
Integrative Literature Review Initial Steps Assignment
This is a research project that provides the opportunity for delving into the professional literature in a particular area of interest. The project serves as a basis for an evidence-based initiative and may be developed as a manuscript suitable for publication. The assignment will be divided into 3 parts across the three practicum courses, NURS 617, NURS 618, and NURS 619. Part 1 will be completed during NURS 617. Professional Portfolio Assignment
As part of the requirements for all final practicum courses, the senior graduate student is required to complete portfolios that highlight components of his/her coursework, special projects, and practicum experiences. This portfolio is to be created using Typhon and published for the instructor’s review. The preceptor will complete an evaluation of the student at the end of the practicum experience. The evaluation will be sent electronically over a secured server through Typhon to the preceptor. The instructor will retain the preceptor evaluation and may review it with the student upon request. The student will complete a Self-Evaluation, an Evaluation of Site and Preceptor, and the preceptor will complete an evaluation of the student. (MLO A, B, C)
All evaluations must be completed and submitted as directed. Failure to submit any of the end-of-course evaluations will result in a final course grade of an “incomplete.” The student will be unable to progress to the next practicum course until the grade of “incomplete” is resolved.

Site and Preceptor Evaluation
