Internships need to be considered on the merits and opportunities of potential learning experiences and career advancement. The skills learned, contacts and references made should be the prime consideration in the selection of an internship.  For these reasons, financial planning is very important before a student does an internship.

Measurable Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

A. Describe the organizational structure of the business/organization.
B. Discuss how the classroom learning applies to your internship experience.
C. Describe the effective and ineffective mechanisms of organizational communication at your site.
D. Describe an ethical dilemma at your workplace, (actual or possible) that you have observed or of which you have been a part. Discuss why you feel this dilemma exists and what actions were/are necessary to resolve the dilemma.
E. Identify the rights and responsibilities of sport management professionals as depicted in codes of professional ethics and justify personal and management values and principles.

Course Requirements Checklist

After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1.

Discussion Board Forum(s) (2)

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student is required to provide a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be 300 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student is required to reply to 2 other classmates’ threads. Each reply must be 100 words.

Quiz: Log Sheet and Journal

The student will document weekly hours on the log sheet and submit an updated log sheet. In addition, the student will describe all duties performed and provide feedback regarding the responsibilities for that week. The student must earn a minimum of 200 hours in order to successfully complete the course.

Quiz: Mid-Term Evaluation

The student will describe his/her interim internship experience on the top section of the evaluation form, and the supervisor will evaluate the intern’s performance on the lower section of the evaluation form.  Both signatures are required needed before submitting the form.

Internship News

The Department of Sport Management will feature student internship information through various publication outlets. The purpose of these student-written paragraphs is to generate awareness for the opportunities available to sport management students.

In one (1)-paragraph includes:

  1. Describe the skills and knowledge you have learned in your college classes and how they related to your internship experiences.
  2. Describe your career goals and aspirations.
  3. Include one photo of you at the physical location (building) or at a significant event (preferably one with the company logo).

Internship Analysis Project

This student will complete an inclusive project discussing various components of the organization including individuals with whom the student worked and duties completed, and updated resume, and a letter of recommendation.  All work must follow the APA formatting guidelines (Times New Roman, 12 font, double spaced, include a title page, level headings and reference page, minimum of ten pages). Do not include an abstract.

Quiz: Final Evaluation

The supervisor will evaluate the intern on the basis of his/her performance over the course of the interim internship.
